NBA Draft History

Hornets 30th Anniversary

Draft History

Starting with Rex Chapman in 1988, the Hornets have used the NBA Draft to add quality young players to the franchise. The Hornets have had the No. 1 pick only once, but they made the most of it, using the first pick in 1991 to select Larry Johnson, who would go on to become NBA Rookie of the Year and a multi-time NBA All-Star. The following year, Charlotte added future Hall-of-Famer Alonzo Mourning with the second overall pick.

In 1999, the Hornets made one of the largest jumps ever in the NBA Draft Lottery, landing the No. 3 pick – which they used to select Baron Davis – despite having just a 1.83 percent chance of moving into the top three after posting the best record among the 13 teams in the lottery.

Charlotte added a second Rookie of the Year in 2004 when they drafted Emeka Okafor with the No. 2 pick.
