The Charlotte Hornets invited youth and adult artists to create an art piece that celebrates the history of NBA basketball in Charlotte. Three art pieces from both the youth and adult category have been selected as finalists.

We are now asking you, the fans, to determine one Grand Prize Winner from each category.

Contest Theme

“The History of NBA Basketball in Charlotte”

Create an art piece that celebrates the history of NBA basketball in Charlotte. For example, fans can illustrate the momentous plays, spirited traditions or extraordinary triumphs that made the team what it is today.

Judging Criteria

Artwork will be judged on the following parameters:

  1. Artistic merit: Based on artistic skill
  2. Creativity: Representation of the contest theme and unique approach to the artwork
  3. Theme communication: How well the contest theme is expressed in both the artwork and description

Artwork will be grouped and judged by the following categories:

  • Youth (under 18)
  • Adult (over 18)

Competition Levels

3 finalists for each category, 6 in total
The Charlotte Hornets will select the top three art pieces from each category as Finalists.

Grand Prize Winners
1 winner for each category, 2 in total
For a period of 14 days (October 2-October 16, 2018), the public will vote for their favorite art piece from each category. These votes will determine one youth Grand Prize Winner and one adult Grand Prize Winner.


Grand Prize Winners
The two Grand Prize Winners will have their artwork featured on and displayed at Spectrum Center during the 2018-19 season. Each Grand Prize Winner will also receive:

  • Four tickets to a select Hornets regular-season home game
  • Hornets player autographed jersey
  • Hornets Fan Shop gift card

The remaining Finalists will have their artwork featured in an online gallery on Each Finalist will receive:

  • Hornets player autographed photo
  • Hornets Fan Shop gift card

How To Enter

  1. Create an art piece that celebrates the history of NBA basketball in Charlotte.
  2. Complete the entry form at
  3. On the entry form, provide a title and description of the art piece and any interesting facts, ideas, quotes or existing media used in the art piece that is not your own.
    • For example, if you use a quote, please cite it. If you are painting from a photo, please provide a photo credit of the original photographer in the description.
  4. Attach up to 3 digital photos or scans of your single art piece in JPG or PNG format.
  5. Entry forms must be submitted digitally at by 11:59 p.m. EST on September 14, 2018.

Art Criteria

  • The final artwork size must be at least 16″ x 20″ but not exceed 22” x 32” on canvas, paper, or other mixed media.
  • Artwork must weigh less than 30 pounds and be able to fit comfortably in a standard frame.
  • Artwork can either be vertical or horizontal.

Public Voting

Once the entry period is closed and Charlotte Hornets judges have narrowed the field to the six Finalists, the public will be invited to vote online. Voters will be asked to select their favorite art piece, one from each category.

Key Dates

  • Contest opens: August 14, 2018
  • Contest closes: September 14, 2018
  • Public voting begins: October 2, 2018
  • Public voting ends: October 16, 2018


  • All entrants must comply with the Official Rules.
  • Limit 1 contest entry per person per duration of contest.
  • Six finalists will be notified by September 18, 2018.
  • Finalists must submit physical artwork to the Charlotte Hornets.
  • Artwork can be dropped off or submitted by mail at the address below.
  • Mailed submissions must be postmarked by September 19, 2018, and received by September 26, 2018.
